CONTENT WARNINGS: ANIMAL DEATH

Monstrous Beasts, the sequel to Strange Familiars and the second book in the Seamere College duology contains a major trigger warning for on-page animal death. As this book takes place in various veterinary settings, graphic depictions of animal/patient deaths exist on-page. Percy the cat, and Gwendolynne's familiar, dies in the book. The actual death is not depicted, however, the anaesthesia leading to his death is depicted graphically. He dies because he chooses to self-sacrifice in order to save the world and other animals. However (ANOTHER MAJOR SPOILER AHEAD), as this is a fantasy novel, he does come back to life in the final chapter, as the adage about cats having 'nine lives' turns out to be true. Thus, there is a happy ending for all characters (including Percy) but not without some heartbreak first.

If you are sensitive to this content, please look after yourself first and foremost. It is completely valid and understandable if you choose not to read this book. If you do choose to read the book, I have tried to depict Percy's death as sensitively and realistically as possible. As a veterinarian myself, I take pet deaths very seriously and want to bear witness to the bravery of every pet/patient and owner/client that I have guided through this heartrending process.
